Rescuers launch awareness-raising campaigns to prevent drownings

As many as 29 persons drowned in Moldova’s lakes and ponds this year so far. The figure is the lowest in the last four years. A number of 31 persons drowned in the corresponding period last year, IPN reports, quoting the Public Relations Division of the Ministry of the Interior.

In a move to prevent the cases of drowning, the rescuers are carrying out awareness-raising campaigns all over the country. The persons are urged to obey the rules concerning behavior on water and to supervise the children when these swim. Among the causes of drownings are drinking of alcohol and swimming in banned places or at night. The cases of drowning happen most often on the weekend and during dog days.

It should be noted that of the 4,200 lakes and rivers of the country, only 19 have rescue stations.
