According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the rescuers and firefighters in southern Moldova during the last 24 hours carried out works to put out the fire and to take away parts of the silo that collapsed so as to have access to the burning area.

There were also executed works to cool down the silo situated nearby (No. 2) so as to prevent an eventual risk situation.

The collapse of the metal storage tower with over 1,000 tonnes of sunflower groats inside was reported at about 7am on January 16. Six firefighting teams were dispatched to the scene and they managed to localize the blaze close to midday. No one was hurt in the fire.
