Rerun elections postponed from the Ascension to Sts Constantine and Helen Day
The rerun elections for choosing the president of Moldova set to take place today, May 28, were rescheduled for June 3 at the suggestion of the Communist Party (PCRM), Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Today, it is the Ascension, a time of rejoicing and conciliation. It should not be a day of polemics and statements that would plunge the country into a new election campaign,” said Maria Postoico, leader of the parliamentary group of the PCRM.
By the vote of 60 Communist MPs, the sitting was postponed for June 3, when it is celebrated another feast – Saints Constantine and Helen.
Ninety-nine out of the 101 MPs attended today’s sitting. Veaceslav Platon (AMN) and Dorin Chirtoaca (PL) were absent.
Before the sitting, the PL leader Mihai Ghimpu said that the Liberal faction is for free and fair early parliamentary elections. “We remain faithful to our voters. If they had wanted a Communist President, they would have voted so,” Ghimpu said.
”Every member of the AMN will use their common sense when voting,” said the party’s president Serafim Urecheanu. He said that the decision was made after numerous accusations that there is dictatorship in the party. He also said that he trusts every AMN MPs and in general all the 41 MPs from the Opposition.
Former Prime Minister Zinaida Zinaida Grecianai and Moldova’s Ambassador to Russia Andrei Neguta run for the presidency. Both of the candidates have been pout forward by the (PCRM). Greceanii was put up by 33 MPs, while Neguta – by 16 MPs.
The Opposition proposed no candidates and said it will not take part in the election of the head of state. The Communist faction holds 60 seats of MP and needs one more vote to chose the head of state.
On May 20, the Parliament failed to elect the president. Zinaida Greceanaa gained 60 votes, all cast by the Communist MPs. Academician Stanislav Groppa, who was also put up by the PCRM, polled no vote.
If the head of state is not elected at rerun elections, there will be held early elections.
