Republic's Day becomes again Independence Day

The Parliament of Moldova adopted a bill to restore the old name of the August 27 holiday - the Independence Day, which was instituted 19 years ago. At the April 23 sitting, the MPs also voted in favor of marking the National Flag Day on April 27, Info-Prim Neo reports. Unaffiliated MP Victor Stepaniuc protested, saying August 27 should remain the Republic's Day, as agreed several years ago, because this is a holiday of the state. Democrat MP Oleg Serebrian considers that the Government's proposal to rename the holiday is opportune. '”It is true that not everybody is in favor of Moldova's independence, but this is not a reason for naming this day so strangely (the Republic's Day). Other countries mark such days, but in a different context,” Serebrian said. The first deputy speaker of Parliament Serafim Urecheanu shared Serebrian's opinion, saying on August 27, 1991 it was voted for the country's independence. Victor Stepaniuc also did not agree with the decision to celebrate the National Flag Day on April 27 (the tricolor was adopted on April 27, 1990 – e.n.). He said it should be marked on November 3 as Moldova's coat of arms indicated on the flag was adopted on this day in 1990. “The flag adopted on April 27 is identical with Romania's. But is began being used on November 3,” he said.
