Republican Party to run in early parliamentary elections

The Republican Party will take part in the early legislative elections this autumn, the party's new chairman Andrei Stratan, Foreign Minister in the Tarlev and Grecheanyi Governments, announced in a news conference on September 16, Info-Prim Neo reports. The other executive posts will be filled at the party's congress in October. The congress will also adopt the new program of the Republican Party. Andrei Stratan said he will propose former Deputy Foreign Minister Valeriu Ostalep and lawyer Ion Dron for deputy chairmen of the party. Ion Dron represented former presidential adviser Sergiu Mocanu in a number of trials. The Republican Party aims to enter the Parliament after the autumn elections. It says it will not cooperate with other parties in the election campaign. “We want to attract competent and honest persons who are not interested in unions, separations, boycotting and infinite polemics about abstract things,” said Andrei Stratan. Among the party's priorities, he mentioned Moldova's integration into the EU and economic recovery. The Republican Party was founded in 1999. In the April 5, 2009 parliamentary elections it won 0.09% of the vote. It withdrew from the campaign for the July 29 early elections, but offered its support to the Democratic Party. Andrei Stratan was named chairman on August 1, 2010, about one year after the Communists were removed from power. He had represented the Communists Party, but wasn't a member of this party.
