The representatives of the Great National Assembly, who were delegated to hold discussions with the senior government officials in the September 6 protes, met with a group of advisers to President Nicolae Timofti in the Government Building, not yet with the Premier or the Speaker, as they asked. After the discussion that lasted for about 45 minutes, the head of the Council of the Great National Assembly Andrei Nastase said such an attitude represents an insult to the people. On the other hand, the secretary of the President’s Staff Ion Paduraru said that Nicolae Timofti delegated his advisers to represent him in this dialogue, IPN reports.
Ion Paduraru told the members of the Council of the Great National Assembly that Nicolae Timofti announced he will not resign as the country would be thus thrown into a new stage of political instability. The protest organizers want early parliamentary elections, but will not manage to obtain them with the President’s assistance. Nicolae Timofti is also for the direct election of the President, by the people, but the amendment of the Constitution is not within his competence.
The secretary also said that the protest organizers assert that about 100,000 people who took part in the September 6 protest demand holding early elections, but the elections involve about 2 million people. That’s why such a decision should be taken by the politicians mandated by the voters.
After the meeting, Andrei Nastase said the head of state this time again didn’t understand the people’s message and didn’t come to meet with the representatives of the protesters. Nastase transmitted a message to Nicolae Timofti through the latter’s advisers, asking him to invite the Prime Minister and the Head of Parliament to a discussion with members of the Council, noting that such an act would be fair towards the people that they represent.
