Representatives of “Democracy at Home” Party: Vasile Costiuc’s arrest is an abuse

An abuse was committed against the leader of the Party “Democracy at Home” Vasile Costiuc. “We condemn and oppose the abusive actions of representatives of NAC and the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office against Vasile Costiuc. We consider the measures taken by the investigation bodies are carried out by order with the aim of intimidating the leader of the Party “Democracy at Home” and of making him stop criticizing the government and the investigations into frauds committed by particular persons close to the government,” the party’s member Ana Țurcan stated in a news conference at IPN.

Vasile Costiuc was arrested for 72 hours early in the morning of January 12 by anticorruption prosecutors accompanied by officers of the National Anticorruption Center, who carried out searches in his apartment.

“During four hours, while the searches had been conducted, they found nothing and seized nothing, only the mobile phone. But a mobile phone bought six months ago cannot contain information about actions taken in 2006 and we therefore consider that the mobile phone was taken only with the aim of gaining access to personal data that is available there. Many citizens sent information to Mister Vasile Costiuc, furnishing him with names of persons from the current government and its satellites. We are sure that the phone had been thoroughly examined for hours and a report was provided to a representative of the government,” said Tatiana Curchi, a member of the Party “Democracy at Home”.

“The accusations made against Mister Vasile Costiuc are fully unfounded,” said party member Andrei Pripa. He noted that the party’s leader is accused of abuse of office, but Vasile Costiuc didn’t hold any public post when the scheme was allegedly implemented, while in the case of money laundering in a group, legal action was taken in 2005, when Vasile Costiuc didn’t know the persons who purportedly formed part of that group.

“Intimidation actions were taken after the parliamentary elections. I don’t know why namely after the elections, but then they began to start administrative cases and then criminal proceedings,” stated Andrei Pripa. “We will not allow this abuse to be committed for Mister Vasile Costiuc to stay in jail instead of other persons.”

“The member of the Party “Democracy at Home” addressed a number of letters to embassies working in Chisinau so that they take note of the evident violations committed against Mister Vasile Costiuc,” said party member Victor Pogolșa. He noted that Vasile Costiuc went on hunger strike and will continue to be on it until he is held at the NAC’s remand prison. “Vasile Costiuc fears actions can be taken to liquidate him,” stated Victor Pogolșa.
