The representative of the Central Election Commission of ATU Gagauzia was summoned to the National Anticorruption Center for the procedure to unseal the boxes with electoral rolls that were seized on Tuesday. According to the NAC, the procedure will take place in the presence of the lawyer for the representative of CEC Gagauzia and will be recorded. The recording will be added to the case file, IPN reports.
The Center provided details about the actions taken by the investigation body in Comrat in connection with suspicions of illegal financing of the campaign prior to the gubernatorial election in Gagauzia and of voter corruption.
“During special investigative measures, reasonable suspicions appeared as to the fact that the registers of voters included persons who are outside the country and were physically unable to vote in the election and also dead persons. To verify this information, the electoral rolls had to be seized,” stated the NAC.
The representative of CEC Gagauzia and his lawyer were contacted today, but the NAC was informed that these will be able to take part in the planned procedure on Friday, May 19.
As a result of the searches conducted on Tuesday, later the same day the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia convened and the meeting involved representatives of the Executive Committee and also Yevgenia Gutsul, who won the Bashkan election according to the preliminary results. The deputies from Comrat leveled harsh criticism at the law enforcement agencies and the central public authorities, accusing them of abuse, wrongdoings and enormous pressure exerted on the Gagauz electoral authority. Ultimately, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and the Executive Committee approved the Gagauz Electoral Commission’s decision by which Yevgenia Gutsul is recognized as election winner. Another meeting was set for May 27 and this will involve the deputies of all levels form ATU Gagauzia.
