The replacement of the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language” in the Constitution is regarded by some politicians as the restoration of the true linguistic identity, while by others as a potential cause for destabilization in Moldova. The issue was discussed in the program “Red button” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

Liberal-Democratic MP Vadim Pistrinciuc said one of the reasons for which the amendment of the Constitution was initiated is the historical aspect and the goal was to bring to an end the manipulation that started in the Soviet times. “The second reason is the fact that the national and international scientific consensus needs to be cemented. The Academy of Sciences first in 1994 stated that the Romanian language is the official language of the Republic of Moldova,” he noted.

Vitalia Pavlichenco, leader of the National Liberal Party, said the Socialists’ and Communists’ fear derives from the fact that the establishment of the real linguistic identity results in the establishment of the ethnic identity that would be followed by the union of the two banks of the Prut into one state.

The President’s adviser on education, culture and research Corneliu Popovici stated that this initiative was not thought out well and poses a threat of destabilization. The initiators aim to divert the people’s attention from the existent problems, from the disaster experienced now by Moldova because of the current government. “The President of the Republic of Moldova will use all the available mechanisms to maintain order and peace in our society,” he said.

Ion Barbuta, of the Institute of Philology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, said the attempt to relate the existence of the Moldovan state to the name of the language is an anachronism. “As regards the language, we should admit and accept the historical truth,” stated Ion Barbuta.
