Repeat presidential election scheduled for Jan.15
A repeat attempt to elect the President will be held on January 15, which falls on a Sunday, announced the leaders of Eurointegration Alliance after a meeting on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Democrat leader Marian Lupu said a formal decision concerning the date of the election would be adopted today in Parliament. Marian Lupu further revealed that after he openly invited the opposition to negotiations, no meeting followed. “I can't see any enthusiasm for discussions in the opposition. I stated from the Parliament's central rostrum that I was ready for discussions, but I didn't receive any answers”, said Lupu.
“Marian Lupu remains the Alliance's presidential candidate. The Liberal Party's position is to keep the Alliance, and the Alliance means what the Agreement says. For us the Alliance means more than the post of Speaker”, stated Mihai Ghimpu, the president of the Liberal Party. In jest, Ghimpu proposed an alternative distribution of top posts: Zinaida Greceanyi Presedent, Igor Dodon – Prime Minister, and Veronica Abramciuc – Speaker.
Liberal-Democrat leader Vlad Filat said the Alliance further needed to discuss on the presidential nomination. “If the Alliance decides that Marian Lupu is the candidate, then so be it, but he should personally assume responsibility for the vote and the consequences”, said Vlad Filat.
The first attempt to elect the President on December 16 failed after the only candidate Marian Lupu was three votes short of the minimum required 61. One ballot was declared invalid and three Socialist MPs voted against Lupu, while the Communists boycotted the vote altogether.
If a quorum of 61 parliamentarians is not met at the repeat election, it will be declared null and a new attempt will be called. If at least 61 parliamentarians participate in the vote, but the President is not elected, Parliament will be dissolved and early legislative elections will be called.
Earlier, unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea requested the Constitutional Court to invalidate the December 16 attempt because it was allegedly held in breach of the secret vote principle, as the parliamentarians decided to expose their ballots to public viewing.
