Speed maximums on rental e-scooters will be set at 10-15 km/h in parks, pedestrian crossings and other busy areas, but also at locations that get frequent accidents involving e-scooters. This was decided at a meeting between representatives of the National Public Security Inspectorate and e-scooter sharing companies.
Based on research carried out by the police analyzing e-scooter riding patterns and involvement in incidents or accidents, a 120 kg weight limit for the rider was also set.
From the beginning of this year, 50 traffic incidents/accidents involving electric scooters were reported. One person died and 50 others were injured.
To prevent accidents, e-scooter riders are reminded they must cross the street at pedestrian crossings; they must dismount and push the device by its handlebars when crossing. Also, riders are reminded to wear protective equipment and a reflective vest, be always mindful of pedestrians and not drive the wrong way on one-way streets, among other rules.
