The existence of counterterrorism teams on the airport is a world practice. In the Republic of Moldova, only 25 or 30 of the 50 border police officers who must work at the airport are there, said the leader of Our Party Renato Usatyi. According to the politician, in all the developed states, counterterrorism teams patrol airports, while Moldova does not have such a team even if it is under the state of emergency, IPN reports.
The leader of Our Party said the head of the Border Police and the director of the Security and Intelligence Service are to blame for the tragedy that happened at the Chisinau International Airport. The heads of the three institutions do not have the training needed to deal with national security, especially when there is an ongoing war on the border.
“Earlier, a civilian could not become Minister of the Interior or SIS director. I’m not against the work done by Ana Revenco for the organization “La Strada”. But she came and doesn’t know what grouping deals with cigarette smuggling and what grouping deals with ethyl alcohol smuggling. Or Alexandru Musteață from the SIS, who is a jurist, doesn’t know who of his inferiors report to embassies. In 2019, the flow at the airport was of over 3 million people a year. This means that at least 50 police officers need to work in a shift. But there are only 25-30 police officers there. Rosian Vasiloi continues to wear a pistol so that children see him and give a like to him on Facebook and he does this including at Cabinet meetings. But the Baltic countries staged special tactical shooting courses for Border Police employees. Ours employed persons from human resources, from accounting, but no one from the field,” Renato Usatyi stated in the program “Expertise Hour” on JurnalTV channel.
He noted that the number of border police officers working at the airport is insufficient and the absence of a counterterrorism team when there is a state of emergency and a war in Ukraine is inexplicable.
“You must see what the counterterrorism unit does in Romania, at the Airport in Otopeni, on flights with an increased security risk, like Tel-Aviv. The counterterrorism officers do not wear pistols, but automatic rifles and guns and patrol from the check-in area, not only the passport control area. And Romania does not have a state of emergency. This is a world practice,” said the leader of Our Party.
Two persons died as a result of the June 30 armed attack at the Chisinau International Airport. President Maia Sandu decreed a national day of mourning for July 4 to commemorate the two victims and signed a decree to confer posthumously the Military Merit medal on Igor Ciofu, lieutenant colonel in reserve of the State Guard and Protection Service, and on Sergey Munteanu, chief deputy agent of the Border Police of the Ministry of the Interior.
