“Registru” takes over production of license plates

From January 3, the license plates of motor vehicles will be produced exclusively by the state-owned company “Registru”. The company purchased special equipment to the value of about €100,000. The plates will contain a number of security elements, but visually will not be different from the previous ones, IPN reports.

ICT Minster Pavel Filip told a news conference that the new system for producing license plates ensures grater protection for the license numbers and reduces production costs. At the initial stage, the price of a license plate will be 340 lei, by 50 lei lower.

Over the last 12 years, the license plates had been made by a private company, based on a contract that expired on December 31, 2013. As a result of a study, it was decided that “Registru” will take over this task. “We added additional protection signs. There is an exhaustive database with information covering the production of license plates up to their destruction,” said the minister.

In January – November 2013, there were issued over 80,000 sets of license plates, 2.6% or 2,083 sets of which with the asked for symbols.
