The referendums held in Gagauzia form part of a series of events that are supported by external forces and are aimed at preventing Moldova from signing the Association Agreement with the EU, chairman of the Democratic Party (PDM) Marian Lupu said in the program “Moldova live” on the national TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

According to the Democratic leader, the Moldovan authorities had an appropriate position on these referendums because it was a not at all an easy situation. Particular persons were waiting for the authorities to yield up to emotions so that they could intervene.

Marian Lupu said that 2014 is a very important year for Moldova because it is an electoral one and because the Association Agreement is to be signed this year. It will be characterized by political struggles between the government coalition and the opposition, which may be heated. “Certain limits are exceeded in parts, including as regards the integration into the EU versus the integration into the Eurasian Customs Union,” he stated. “On the one hand, effort is made to unite society. On the other hand, they resort to speculation in order to destroy this unity. When there is a planned split, it is very hard to manage things and to solve major problems.”

The chairman of the PDM said that if the Association Agreement is not signed, the efforts made during the last four years will be annihilated. He welcomed the fact that the government coalition became more united as this has an effect on its daily work.
