Referendum will be validated if at least one third of voters cast ballots, CEC

The national constitutional referendum of October 20 will be validated if at least one third of the voting-eligible citizens go to the polls and mark their choice. The law will be considered adopted if the majority of citizens will vote “Yes” in the referendum, the head of the Communication, Public Relations and Media Division of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Rodica Sirbu told IPN.

The referendum is aimed at supplementing the Constitution with two new paragraphs that confirm the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the country’s European path. The voter will answer “Yes” or “No” to the question: “Are you for amending the Constitution so as to stipulate the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it?”

The CEC will submit a report on the results of the referendum to the Constitutional Court and the Court, within 10 days, will validate or invalidate the outcome of the plebiscite.

The law adopted by referendum shall be published in a special edition of the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova and the day of the national constitutional referendum shall be considered the date of its adoption.
