The constitutional referendum passed with a difference of about 13,600 votes between the “Yes” and “No” options. 50.46% of the participants in the plebiscite voted in favor of enshrining the national objective to join the EU in the Constitution, IPN reports.

According to CEC data presented after all the 2,219 minutes were counted, 751,235 votes were “for” and 737,639 votes were “against”.

In the municipality of Chisinau, 55.98% of the 348,707 voters who went to the polls voted to amend the Constitution for enshrining Moldova’s accession to the European Union in the Constitution.

In Balti municipality, the majority of electors, 70.58%, voted against the amendment of the Constitution. In Gagauzia, the proportion of those who voted “No” is even higher – 94.84%.

In Cahul, the ratio is 56.19% “No” to 43.81% “Yes”.

In the 30 polling stations opened for voters from the Transnistrian region, 62.56% of the ballots were with the “No” option, and 37.44% – with the “Yes" option.

Abroad, the vote tipped the balance for amending the Constitution. About 77% of the Moldovans in the diaspora said "Yes" in the referendum.

The Central Election Commission is to submit to the Constitutional Court a report on the results of the referendum, which, for its part, within 10 days, will confirm or reject by a decision the results of the plebiscite.

Over 1.562 million citizens voted in Sunday’s election, ensuring a turnout of 51.68%.
