Referendum must provide answers to real questions that concern citizens, Irina Vlah

The national referendum announced by the President, which could take place simultaneously with the presidential election, must provide answers to the real questions that concern the citizens of the Republic of Moldova today, said the leader of the Moldova Platform Irina Vlah, who considers that the first of these questions refers to the constitutional status of the permanent neutrality of the Republic of Moldova.

In a press conference staged by IPN, Irina Vlah said that on December 24, President Maia Sandu made public her intention to organize a referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU. This referendum has nothing to do with the vote on EU membership, but represents a PR action in the interests of a politician. Moreover, this action will be financed with state budget funds even if it does not bring Moldova closer to the EU.

“Today this goal is a distant one for Moldova and the actions planned by the head of state further distance Moldova from the EU. This this is realized in Brussels and Maia Sandu herself understands it. A question arises, why does the President embark on such an adventure, misleading the inhabitants of Moldova? It is obvious that Maia Sandu takes this step due to the lack of results which she could present to the voters in the presidential election,” said the chairwoman of the Moldova Platform.

According to her, under these circumstances, the Platform proposes to efficiently and practically use the budgetary resources for the state. “This referendum should provide answers to the real questions that concern the citizens of the Republic of Moldova today, to real problems and concerns. In her opinion, the first of these questions refers to the constitutional status of permanent neutrality of the Republic of Moldova,” said Irina Vlah.

She noted that given the geopolitical confrontation and the war in the neighboring state, debates on this strategic topic are more topical than ever. Moreover, the Sandu-PAS Government has made it clear for several times that it supports the revision of the principles of Article 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, because, in the authorities’ viewpoint, they no longer reflect the political reality. Moldova is a small country that is at the crossroads of spheres of geopolitical influence. Therefore, neutrality has always been and should remain one of the basic values of the state.

“We ask the Parliament and the President of the Republic of Moldova to include the confirmation of the inviolability of the neutrality status of our country in the announced national referendum,” concluded Irina Vlah.
