Referendum campaign was absent in Transnistria, Promo-Lex
The nongovernmental organization Promo-Lex considers there was no campaign for the September 5 constitutional referendum in the Transnistrian region as no party and no election body took measures to inform the people there, Info-Prim Neo reports.
”The parties or participants in the campaign did not pay enough attention to this campaign in Transnistria so as not to expose to risks the persons who would have distributed election materials in the eastern region, though it was possible,” the head of Promo-Lex Ion Manole said in a news conference on September 3. According to Manole, another reason is the fact that the parties do not manage to conduct an active campaign all over the country, with the Transnistrian region being most often ignored.
Promo-Lex jurist Pavel Postica said the financial reports presented by the participants in the referendum showed that only five of them were actually involved in the campaign. The others chose to take part only in televised debates and use the free airtime allotted to them to make their positions public.
Twenty-five political organizations were registered as participants in the referendum campaign. Seventeen of them campaign in favor of amending Article 78 of the Constitution, four campaign against, while four urge the population to boycott the plebiscite.
In the September 5 referendum, voters will be asked if they are in favor or against amending the Constitution so that the head of state is elected by popular vote.
