Recusal refused in case filed by Chisinau mayor, judge steps aside

Judge Domnica Manole of the Chisinau Court of Appeals, while examining the objection by Liberal Party president Mihai Ghimpu to recuse Judge Elena Gligor from hearing a case filed by Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, announced on Thursday she was voluntarily stepping aside.
Judge Manole blamed excessive media coverage for her self-recusal decision, arguing that intrusive reports on the case could have impaired the soundness of the judgment.
On August 6, ProTV channel aired video recordings with Judge Manole consulting one of the parties involved in the case.
Another judge, Eugenia Coval, examined the recusal request and dismissed it as groundless. So, Elena Gligor is to further hear the case filed by Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, in which he seeks to annul the dismissal of Mihai Ghimpu as City Council chair and the election of Eduard Musuc in his place.
The next court sitting is scheduled for Monday, August 11.
