Recovery of US$1bn: 900m lei was returned to central bank

The recovery of the stolen US$1 billion remains a priority. Over 900 million lei was returned to the National Bank of Moldova and the process goes on, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said in a press briefing held on December 20, on the occasion of one year of the investing of the Government, IPN reports.

“At internal level, more than 700 million lei was recovered. Over 1.5 billion lei more is to be obtained from selling banks’ assets. Over 900 million lei has been returned to the National Bank of Moldova and the process continues,” stated the Premier.

According to him, the bodies that investigate the banking frauds focused also on the recovery of the stolen money by selling property confiscated from bad payers. This will enable to gain over 2 billion lei.

“Furthermore, at external level, within its investigation the Kroll already identified US$600 million and will present a concrete money recovery plan at the final stage. This will refer both to the money transferred to bank accounts in other states and to the property bought with this,” said Pavel Filip.

He also said that political will exists and the best ways will be identified for continuing to recover the money.

The US$1 billion was stolen from the Moldovan banking system through three banks that were later liquidated.
