Recommendations for dog days

The Ministry of Health during the dog days recommends avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, especially between 11am and 6pm, drinking at least two liters of liquid, including juices and water, and setting the air conditioner a temperature that is by 5 degrees lower than the temperature inside, IPN reports.

During hot weather, it is indicated wearing loose and light clothes, made from natural fabric, and sunhats. It is not recommended drinking alcoholic beverages, including wine and bear, and drinks with a high content of caffeine (café, cola) or sugar (carbonated soft drinks) as these favor dehydration and diminish the body’s residence to heat.

Warm showers during the day are indicated. No air conditioning should be used in rooms where the temperature of the air does not exceed 32 degrees Celsius. Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is favorable as these contain much water. The food with high fat, sugar and salt content, the fast-food and fried and smoked food are not recommended.

The elderly people, children and persons with disabilities should be provided increased attention in the period and should be regularly offered water, even if they do not ask for it. The children must not be left unsupervised even if for short periods, including in vehicles or poorly-ventilated rooms. Swimming in cold water is banned.

The persons suffering from chronic cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, pulmonary, mental diseases and with hypertension should see the family doctor to have their therapeutic treatment adjusted to the existing conditions.

An orange code warning covering all the country’s regions was issued for July 7 – 9. On July 7, daytime temperatures in most of the districts will reach 34-35 degrees Celsius, while on July 8 and 9 - 36-38 degrees Celsius.
