Reactions to morbid images on TV
The mass media products consumers are unhappy that TV news and websites of radio stations contain morbid images and details of crimes and car accidents. Several complaints have been received by the Press Council of Moldova, which forwarded them to the Coordinating Council of the Audiovisual, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to a statement of the Press Council, information consumers complain that some TV channels and news portals don’t respect the dignity of victims and their relatives when showing crime reports.
As a result of the Press Council request, CCA decided to monitor the TV channels. “Broadcasting morbid images in newscasts is worrying not only because it violates the victims' and their relatives' right to dignity, but because it is morally wrong and harmful for children”, reads the CCA response to the Press Council.
The two institutions agreed to organize public debates in September and October on the topic of protecting human dignity and children safety in mass media.
The journalist’s deontological code obliges mass media workers to protect the person’s right to private life and dignity and to not publish morbid details of crimes, accidents and natural disasters or details about suicidal methods. The Coordinating Council of Moldova forbids the broadcasting of programs that could severely affect the children’s physical, mental or moral development.
