Ratio of women to men in Moldova is 100:91

The female population prevails among the population with ordinary residence. In 2018, the ratio of women to men was 100:91. The ratio differs significantly depending on particular age groups. The men prevail in the 0-14 age bracket, where the ratio of men to women is 105:100. In the 15-34 age bracket, the number of men is almost identical to that of women. The differences are more accentuated in the 35-64 age bracket and in the 65+ bracket, where the ratio of women to men is of 100:91 and 100:61, IPN reports.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, life expectancy for women is longer than for men. Women live by almost 8 years longer than men. Life expectancy at birth in 2018 was 75 for women and slightly over 66 for men. This discrepancy is caused by the high rate of premature mortality among men, especially those of working age (16-62 years).

Statistics show women get married earlier than men. The average age of women at the first marriage in 2018 was 25.8, while of men was 28.7. Most of the men who got married in 2018 belonged to the 25-29 age group (37.9%). Among women, 36.5% got married at the age of 20 to 24. Marriages up to 20 are more often in rural areas: 10.2%, as opposed to 4% in urban areas.

Women have a higher training level than men, but the employment rate among women is lower than among men. The working women have a higher education level than the working men and these work mainly in the service sector. The women prefer paid activities and formal jobs to a greater extent. They earn by 14% on average less than the men.
