Ramona Strugariu: Moldova is definitely ready to start accession negotiations

The Republic of Moldova is prepared to open accession negotiations and this thing was confirmed by the European Parliamenr and by the European Commison, said Romanian MEP Ramona Strugariu. According to her, the decision concerning the opening of accession negotiations will be a combined decision that will cover Ukraine as well. Some of the European leaders are still considering the opportunity of opening accession negotiations with this country, IPN reports.

Ramona Strugariu said she is sure that the Republic of Moldova is prepared to start accession negotiations. If the European Council in its upcoming meeting decides to open the accession negotiations, the accession calendar should be set by next spring.

“I think the Republic of Moldova is definitely ready to open accession negotiations. It is the first thing I say and not only I say this. The European Parliament said this firmly for many times, including in its most recent resolution. I’m also the mouthpiece of all my mates who support this European approach of the Republic of Moldova. The European Commission said it in the reports it presented with relevant recommendations. So, there is no place for doubt. I think that when the Council gives the green light, we should have a very clear accession calendar by spring. We should decide each negotiation chapter and agree this chapter as it should be. I know that the Republic of Moldova is getting ready and already constituted working groups and is on the way of preparing the 35 negotiation chapters, chapter by chapter,” Ramona Strugariu stated in the program “Reflection Points” on Vocea Basarabiei station.

According to the MEP, some of the European leaders are skeptical about the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine.

“The discussion is held in a slightly broader context as both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are covered. It goes to budgetary discussions, to instruments we create at European level to further support these European approaches. Surely, there are arguments as some of the European leaders stridently say that they are not ready to give the go-ahead namely to Ukraine and that there are others waiting for their turn. But it does not go to who is the first in the line as the approach is based on merits. Turkey, for example, joined the row many years ago, but this doesn’t mean that it is ready or deserves to form part of the European family,” noted the MEP.

A final decision on the eventual opening of EU accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova will be taken in the European Council’s meeting of December 14-16 in Brussels.
