Rally in support of peaceful protests in Bucharest

Tens of persons have gathered on Sunday evening, August 12, in the capital’s Ștefan cel Mare monument square, to support the peaceful protesters in Bucharest. In an event organized by Parties Political Platform “Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA), “Action and Solidarity” (PAS), and the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), the participants have declared that the situation in Bucharest is much similar to the one in Chișinău – the same kind of mafia governs the country, the people came to a peaceful protest, but the police have resorted to forceful interventions, IPN reports.

The people who came to the event have chanted “PDM and PSD – the same mafia!”, “Dragnea PSD = Plaha PD!”, “Chișinău – Bucharest, twin hearts that beat together!!!”, “Solidarity! I rezist! No to criminals!”, “We WON’T give up, we will protest!”, etc.

PPPDA vice president Alexandru Slusari stated that in the past few days he had felt like a Romanian, with tears in his eyes and gas in his lungs. The protests in Romania are by citizens against the mafia, just like those in Moldova. “We support these beautiful people in their fight against the mafia. We can see the collusion, which has become even more evident after the events on Friday,” noted Alexandru Slusari.

Inga Grigoriu, PPPDA vice president, said that the “protests in Romania, are similar to those in Moldova: the same kind of governmental mafia, we are against corruptionists and criminals.”

For three consecutive days, in Bucharest’s Victory Square, tens of thousands of people have protested and chanted slogans telling government officials to resign. In Romania’s larger cities, as well, thousands of people have taken to the streets, to show solidarity with those in the capital. Protests were held in Cluj, Sibiu, Brașov, Timișoara, Iași, Arad, Bacău, and Constanța.

According to Romanian press, on Friday, around 50 thousand people have protested on Victory Square in Bucharest. The protest went out of control and, throughout the evening, several violent clashes occurred between protesters – who had thrown rocks and other objects towards jandarmerie officers – and the jandarmerie, who had resorted to tear gas and water cannons. There were children and women among the 440 persons to receive medical attention, and 65 have been hospitalized. Meanwhile, military prosecutors have initiated a criminal file on the interventions of the jandarmerie in Victory Square.
