Rains worse for agriculture than floods

The recent floods have had an insignificant impact on agriculture, according to the fresh issue of the “Economic Reality” periodical published by the analytical center Expert-Grup on Thursday. Expert-Grup director Valeriu Prohnitchi told a news conference the same day that the greater-than-average rainfall was actually the problem that the farmers would have to face, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Prohnitchi, the abundant rains have compromised the expected amounts and quality of wheat. “But this impact will not take catastrophic proportions, as some political parties have claimed in their struggle for power. Food security will be ensured”, said Valeriu Prohnitchi, adding, however, that bread prices could rise, especially since grains are expected to increase in value on the global markets as well. Farmers should draw conclusions from the current situation, the experts suggest. One of them would be to abandon hopes of governmental aid, since the government doesn't have money to compensate the farmers for loss caused by natural disasters. The second conclusion is that the fields, crops, livestock and other farming assets should be insured. A recommendation for the Government is to develop an anti-flooding infrastructure similarly to the anti-hail one. This would require great expenses, which would nevertheless be negligible compared to the damages of a natural disaster. Also the Government and the local authorities should adopt a plan of measures to respond to the changing climate.
