The May 20 torrential rain caused havoc in Chisinau. Trees were downed and branches broken. Basements and even houses were flooded in some of the districts, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the May 21 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, the Public Amenities Division head Petru Gontea said that about 15 houses were flooded owing to the defective drainpipes. Some of the roofs of apartment buildings were damaged and the water poured in. Deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu said that some of the streets were hardly passable. A large quantity of water accumulated at the intersection of Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and the streets Ion Creanga and Calea Iesilor as the rainwater drainage wells were shut. Traffic also moved with difficulty on the streets Vasile Lupu and Banulescu Bodoni, where there are no rainwater drainage wells. The wells that were recently built in the square of the Railway Terminal coped with the rainwater and the level of water did not exceed 5 cm. The head of “Spatii Verzi” Association Eliferie Haruta said that at least six trees were downed by the high winds. A tree fell onto the electric power lines on Kaukaz St in Durlesti and the supply of electricity was interrupted. A yellow code advisory for heavy rain with thunder and lightning as well as hail and strong winds in parts was issued for May 20.
