Sunday's heavy rain inundated a number of basements in Botanica district and damaged the streets Muncesti and Minsk. The strong winds downed 15 trees, the head of the Green Areas Association Eliferii Haruta said on Monday, quoted by Info-Prim Neo reports. “The water level was over a meter. Many cellars and basements were flooded. An emergency commission was created to assess the damage caused,” said the deputy head of Botanica district Boris Prepelita. Acting mayor Nistor Grozavu instructed officials of the Public Utilities Division and district heads' offices to examine the apartment buildings affected by the rain and provide financial assistance to the dwellers from the City Hall's reserve fund. “The problem is old. It dates back from 1980, when multistory buildings were erected without constructing drainage channels and taking other protection measures,” said Nistor Grozavu. He ordered that the municipal subdivisions, together with the Institute “Chisinau-Gaz”, lift the gas pipe going along Tabacaria Veche St in Centru district as it prevents the water from passing through the sewerage wells when there is torrential rain. The asphalt washed away on Muncesti and Minsk streets will be replaced in the near future.
