Radiation levels normal following fire at Zaporozhe nuclear power plant

Radiation levels are normal in the wake of the fire at the Zaporozhe nuclear power plant in Ukraine and there is no danger for the population, said the Government of the Republic of Moldova.

The blaze started after Russian military units fired on a training building outside the main reactor complex of the Zaporozhe nuclear power plant, near the city of Enerhodar in southeastern Ukraine. The fire was put out and the plant had not sustained any critical damage in the attack, authorities said early Friday morning.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said Ukraine’s regulator told the organization that there had been no change in reported radiation levels and that the fire had had not affected “essential” equipment.

“We urge calmness and ask you to inform yourselves exclusively from verified sources of information,” runs the Government’s message that is quoted by IPN.
