Punishment of several employees of Mother and Child Institute is nothing else but ‘hand washing’, PPPDA

The dismissal and punishment of several persons in the case of the young woman who gave birth in the toilet of the Mother and Child Institute as a result of medical abortion means nothing else but ‘hand washing” and a continuous attempt to hush up and distract attention from those to blame for the crimes committed daily in the health and other vital systems. This is the position of the Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA), which said that in a democratic state the minister of health and the chief of the medical institution would have normally resigned immediately and a criminal case would have been started to punish the serious violations in accordance with the law, IPN reports.

In a statement, the party said these attempts to mimic administrative justice show once again that the usurpers are not able to do fundamental reforms, to restore the dignity of the noble profession of doctor and to guarantee high-quality and accessible medical services for all the patients.

The PPPDA calls on the whole civil society to make common cause with the organizations that defend the rights of women and protect the consumers of medical services and other specialty NGOs so as to permanently exert pressure on decision-makers and stop the possible deviations in the health system.

The PPPDA asks to thoroughly examine the circumstances in which the illegalities were committed and to identify the responsible persons and hold these accountable in accordance with the Penal Code.

Six employees of the Mother and Child Institute were penalized following the violations ascertained in the case of the woman who gave birth in the maternity hospital’s toilet. The announcement was made in a news conference on January 9. The measures were applied after a commission of the Ministry of Health conducted an internal inquiry. Based on the recommendations formulated by the commission, it was decided to dismiss the head of the Gynecology Section, the senior midwife and the nurse who was on shift on December 13-14, 2018. Punishment in the form of reprimand was imposed on the doctor on guard, the director of the Perinatal Center and medical vice director of the Mother and Child Institute. A disciplinary punishment in the form of warning was also put on the Institute’s director Sergiu Gladun.

The case became known after the woman wrote about the moments through which she went on a social networking site. The young woman accused doctors and nurses of indifference as she was left to suffer pain during 23 hours and gave birth alone in the hospital’s toilet as a result of recommended medical abortion in the 21st week of pregnancy owing to congenital malformation identified in the fetus.
