PUN totals results of first edition of “Memory Week” campaign

The National Unity Party (PUN) summed up the results of the first edition of the campaign a “Memory Week” that was conducted between June 28 and July 6, 2020. According to PUN president Octavian Țîcu, the event was planned as a commemoration of a number of historical events, such as June 28, 1941, and June 12-13, 1941 and June 5-6, 1949, the two deportations waves, IPN reports.

During eight days, the campaign’s team visited 15 localities from north to the south, including Chisinau and Bălți, Țiganca village of Cantemir district, Sociteni, Ialoveni, Cosăuți of Soroca, Călărași, Orhei, Prepelița of Sîngerei. The campaign started with a flashmobbing event that was held simultaneously in 28 localities in Moldova and Europe, with the involvement of the diaspora, by which it was commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Soviet occupation of June 28, 1941.

The PUN and its team visited two memorial complexes, the largest ones in Moldova – in Avdarma and in Mingir. The memorials contain testimonies of historical events, since the Crimea war until the Afghanistan and Nistru wars. There were visited four museums, in Mingir, Avdarma, Vărvăreuca and Cania. The victims of political repression were commemorated by events staged in a number of localities. A visit was made to the monument to Romanian border guards who died on June 26-28, 1940, which is situated in the court of the church in Cosăuți, Soroca.

A number of contests were held as part of the campaign. Three remarkable personalities of the Memory Week were designated, namely Filip Iepure, former mayor and school principal in Cosăuți, Soroca; Victor Țîbrigan, founder of the museum in Vărvăreuca and of the monument to Romanian soldiers, both located in his yard, and Iacob Lupanciuc, founder and organizer of the memorial complex in Mingir, Hâncești. They will receive diplomas and money awards from the PUN. There were chosen three winners of the Memory Week competition who wrote or reproduced own stories about the commemorated events. Each of them will be awarded individually.

On July 11, the PUN launches the campaign “What does Union with Romania mean?”.
