PUG authors make proposals on encouraging tourist business
Promotion of Chisinau as an international tourist destination was one of the issues of the public debate on the capital’s General Urban Plan. The authors of PUG suggest arranging tourist locations in historical sites. There are 977 state-protected monuments in Chisinau, 236 of which have the status of monuments of national importance, the majority being placed in the ‘old town’, and in the historical zone where, 24 percent of the buildings are historical.
Specialists say that it is impossible to implement the initiative of the municipality to build the Cantemir Boulevard. Viorel Miron, consultant at Business Consulting Institute specified that there are 26 historical buildings in this zone, erected at the beginning of the XIX century. These buildings cannot be demolished. Among these, there are 18 residential houses, a school, a memorial house, a complex of buildings annexed to the St. Haralambie church, a parochial house, an administration house dealing with the monastery property on the Athos Mount.
According to the cited source, the historical centre of the capital has to be one of the most representative places, which would attract tourists. At present, the tourist market is rather small. There is no clear concept on the development of tourism in the city and the municipality, the territory is poorly equipped for tourist and entertainment activities. At the same time, the cultural-historical patrimony of the capital is not promoted in press.
Chisinau absorbs 90% of the number of foreign tourists who visit Moldova, thanks to its status of capital city, as well as the relatively large number of residents. The capital has 17 hotels, with a capacity which covers 60% of the national tourist supply. However there are no 5 stared hotels. At the same time there is an insufficiency of motels and hotel units along the main highways.
Concerning the promotion of Chisinau as an international tourist destination, the General Urban Plan proposes the encouragement of tourist business and the regeneration of tourist infrastructure, the organisation of a municipal tourist bureau, the creation of a centre of promoting tourism and travelling, as well as the connection of the city to the main international tourist routes. Other objectives include the development of new capacities of the tourist industry, Info-Prim Neo reports.
