The General Police Inspectorate has launched a campaign to persuade the people to yield up the illegally held firearms. The campaign “Help the Republic of Moldova become a safer country” is supported financially by the European Union and will last by the middle of this December, IPN reports.
General Police Inspectorate director Alexandru Panzari, in a news conference held to launch the campaign, said that in order to avoid possible incidents and to ensure public security, the General Police Inspectorate calls on all the people to realize the necessity of voluntarily yielding up firearms and munitions to the police.
“The General Police Inspectorate makes a call to all the people: if you know the location or identified shells, cartridges, missiles, grenades and other military devices, immediately take measures and bar the access of other persons to these, especially children, and inform the police on 902,” stated Alexandru Panzari.
Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said the goal of the campaign in the short run is to inform the people about the methods of legalizing and yielding illegally held firearms. In the long run, the campaign aims to increase the awareness of the danger associated with small arms and light weapons.
In the campaign launch, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Dafina Gercheva said Moldova joins the region in its efforts to sensitize the public to the danger of illegal holding firearms. Similar campaigns were conducted all over the region with EU funds.
The campaign includes the distribution of leaflets, placing of posters and broadcasting of video clips on TV and social networking sites. Printed materials will be distributed to police stations, governmental agencies, commercial units and other public places.
