Public and political organizations in Transnistria collect signatures to dissolve Supreme Soviet
Transnistrian public and political organizations are conducting a campaign to collect signatures in favor of the dissolution of the Supreme Soviet. This way, the authors of the campaign express their disagreement with the legislative initiative to amend the Constitution and change the structure and form of government in the region, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in Tiraspol reports.
The initiative put forward by 17 deputies was adopted in first reading, but then withdrawn.
Ana Volcova, state adviser to the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov – who is against this legislative initiative - considers that the withdrawal of the bill is a momentary act. “A referendum is needed for the people to express their will,” Volcova said.
The coordinating republican council of public associations and political parties sent a letter to the Transnistrian ministry of state security. “The acts of the Supreme Soviet deputies can be regarded as extremist activity,” the letter says.
Recently, the joint council of staffs calculated that there are needed over 21,000 signatures in support of the dissolution of the Supreme Soviet. An initiative group for holding the referendum is being set up in Tiraspol.
The bill for amending the Constitution of the breakaway Transnistrian republic was passed in first reading on April 15. The proposed amendments ban the president, ministers and other executive officials from holding other paid posts except the basic ones, carry out entrepreneurial activities or be members of parties and public organizations. It also suggests eliminating the post of vice president of the republic and allowing the candidates for the post of deputies in the Supreme Soviet to hold this position for 5 years, while those for member of district and town councils – for 3 years.
