The Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union led to many economic problems. This accord shouldn’t have been signed without the authorities asking first the population to pronounce on the issue through a referendum, the leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) Igor Dodon said in the opening of the international conference “Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union: one year of its signing”. The event was organized by the Socialists, IPN reports.
The conference involved politicians and experts from about ten states and representatives of the Government of Moldova, the diplomatic corps and of international organizations.
“We consider the signing of the accord caused numerous economic problems. Furthermore, its main provisions have a negative impact on our country. The results of the implementation of this accord weren’t discussed in Parliament. In June we demanded that the Government should present a report and tell us what was done and what wasn’t done,” stated Igor Dodon.
“The Moldovan authorities took this political decision without determining the consequences for our country. We cannot say that the whole blame is borne by the European Union. The blame is borne by those in whom the EU put its trust. That’s why the population suffers the consequences,” said the leader of the Socialist faction in Moldova’s Parliament Zinaida Grecheanyi.
The Government’s representative at the conference Daniela Morari, who heads the Foreign Ministry’s General European Integration Division, enumerated several of the accomplishments obtained based on the Association Agreement with the EU, saying that a lot of effort has been made during the last few years to apply the instruments that ensure the functioning of the accord – the Association Council and the Association Committees.
“This year was a hard one, with election campaigns. The Government and Parliament had been less functional in particular periods. However, Moldova adjusted its legislation to 15% of the relevant EU legislation. We think that implementing 15% of the Association Agreement during a year is something significant,” stated Daniela Morari.
She also said that exports in the period grew by 10%. In particular, the exports of grapes and corn to the EU rose five times, of plums – eight times, while of apples – three times. The progress report presented by the Government contains not only results, but also the failures and sets out the long-, short- and medium-term priorities.
The Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union was signed in Brussels on June 27, 2014.
