PSRM: Minister Stamate must resign

The Socialist Party is expecting the Minister of Justice, Olesea Stamate, to resign and it urged the ACUM bloc to appoint as minister a competent person, who will be able to implement real justice reform. The statements were made at a press conference, after the minister of justice said that she will cancel the contest results for the position of General Prosecutor.

"We found that, after several confusing situations generated by how the justice minister managed this contest, we have a tragicomic ending, which brings with it the biggest failure of the current government. The Minister of Justice practically publicly recognized her incompetence, canceled her own contest, which was organized as she wished and with whom she wished. This occurred after the same minister initially publicly defended the results of the contest and gave assurances that everything was organized legally and correctly. Currently, after she was politically pressured, she took a decision that completely discredits the justice reform", said PSRM MP Vasile Bolea.

According to the MP, Olesea Stamate also compromised the legislative amendment made by the parliamentary majority regarding the General Prosecutor selection process, which already was "an amendment on the limit of constitutionality". "Another extremely serious issue is that in her previous statements, but also in the statement announcing the cancellation of the contest, Minister Stamate very clearly suggested that the problem with the contest was that a certain candidate did not pass the contest filter, one that seems to have been the favorite of the political circle for this position. Once again, this indicates a complete lack of independence", said Vasile Bolea.

The counselor to the Speaker of Parliament, Fadei Nagacevschi, said that, since the current minister of justice was appointed to office, she is going from failure to failure and the General Prosecutor appointment contest is one of them. According to the counselor, the minister has assumed political responsibility for the results of the contest and, under these conditions, it means that she must resign.

Socialist MP Grigore Novac said that, unfortunately, the citizens have witnessed several failures lately. "This contest and the amendments to the Law on the prosecutor's office were forced. We, the Socialists, have accepted it for a single reason - we thought it was a good thing. However, we can not accept that the contest had a favorite and that the contest was canceled on the grounds that the favorite did not proceed into the next round of the contest", said the MP.

PSRM MPs said that they will issue statements at a later time regarding the government taking responsibility for the changes in the law that will allow the prime minister to pre-select candidates for the position of General Prosecutor.
