The Party of Socialists (PSRM) and the “Our Party (PPPN) legally put up the tents in the square before the Parliament Building in Chisinau, in preparation for the large-scale protests scheduled for September 27. In a joint news conference held in the “Victory Town”, members of the two parties called on the people to come to protest peacefully and without political slogans.
“Using the members of the Platform “Dignity and Truth”, the government tried to prevent us from protesting peacefully in front of the Parliament Building as this place was announced as the place of the protest from the very beginning. We pitched tents lawfully. The law does not ban this. We put them up based on the preliminary statement submitted to the Chisinau City Hall,” said the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon.
He called on the people to protest together and join forces in the “Freedom Town” and not to come to the protest with the flags of other states. “We came here without geopolitical slogans and without party flags. We didn’t come with messages for Europe, for Russia or for union. We came with a clear message – “Down with the ruling oligarchs”. We came here only with the state flag and the flag of Stephan the Great,” stated Dodon.
The Chisinau City Hall filed a lawsuit to ban the PSRM, PPPN and the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” from mounting a protest in the square before the Parliament Building on September 27. “If the court decides against us, we will maintain that the justice is captive and politically controlled. Under the Law on Assembly and the European Convention on Human Rights, we have the legal right to protest. Our demonstration is absolutely legal,” said Ilian Casu, a member of “Our Party”.
Members and sympathizers of the two parties put up about 70 tents in the square before the Parliament Building in the evening of September 24. The tents were purchased in an organized way by the PSRM. At the next stage, the people will come with their own tents.
