The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova condemns the hurry in which the country’s administration represented by the Party of Action and Solidary filed an application for EU membership. According to the Socialists, the most important decisions of the country should be taken by national consensus, by referendum, IPN reports.
“Any modification of the external political status of our state, the entry into integrationist organizations that restrict our sovereignty and assumption of political commitments is possible only by a referendum and amid a sustainable national consensus, as a number of European states showed during the past 20 years,” said the party.
According to the Socialists, this objective cannot be achieved even through the EU procedures and even the chancellor of Germany, which is a member state of the EU, spoke about the inopportunity of such an initiative with reference to Ukraine.
The Socialists consider this purely populist, “party” initiative of the government can lead to the destabilization of the situation in the country and to the division of society according to political criteria. “Such serous decisions concerning the country’s development course should be made by taking into account the Transnistrian region as the country’s reintegration is the basic objective of the Republic of Moldova,” noted the party.
It called on the authorities to renounce the unilateral conjunctural decisions and political populism, to take into consideration the citizens’ opinion about issues of strategic importance through a referendum and to start dealing with the most pressing problems.
President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu signed the Republic of Moldova’s application for EU membership in the evening of March 3. President Sandu said that if some of the decisions need time, others should be taken promptly and determinedly, taking the opportunities offered by the changing landscape of the world. “The Republic of Moldova must have a clear European path. We are ready to do our best to achieve this fundamental objective. The citizens made such a choice. They see our country’s future in the EU,” stated the official.
