PSD, UCM ask for contributions to deportees monument

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Centrist Union from Moldova (UCM), going on a single list for the parliamentary elections, announce they will set up a national fund to build a monument in the memory of the 1949 deportations, Info-Prim Neo reports. The head of the Ciocana sector of Chisinau, Galina Bostan, a PSD member, told a news conference on July 6 the idea had been launched a year ago by the city hall. “We liked the idea and commited to it,” she said. A statement of the two parties compares July 6, 1949 and April 7, 2009. A PSD member, Dumitru Godoroja, has said both days are black in the history of the Moldovan nation. There were victims then and now. Tatiana Danu and Maria Breahna, members of the Association of Former Deportees, have said the Soviet system has remained active, and the situation is even more tragic now, because they pursue to segregate society. The Chisinau city hall held a tender to choose the maquette for the future monument to the deported, as a specialized jury is to pick up from two models. The Chisinau Municipal Council is to endorse the project.
