The Social Democratic Party of Moldova (PSD) demands that the Prosecutor General’s Office take legal action against Acting President Mihai Ghimpu in accordance with Article 339, paragraph 1 of the Penal Code of Moldova – usurpation of state power and forced maintenance of it, Info-Prim Neo reports. The party made public its position in a news conference on August 20. It requested the PG to open a legal case against Mihai Ghimpu, who is liable to 10 to 15 years in prison in compliance with this article. According to the PSD’s secretary general Sergiu Corobceanu, Mihai Ghimpu started to usurp power in Moldova on June 16, 2010 and continues to maintain it by force, violating Article 78 of the Constitution, according to which the Parliament was to be dissolved that day. “Mihai Ghimpu repeatedly said that he does not want to dissolve the legislative body and call early parliamentary elections. He looks for ways of maintaining the power against the law,” said Sergiu Corobceanu. The Social-Democrats say the chaos and instability in the country is due to the erroneous interpretation of the Moldovan legislation, aimed at promoting group interests.
