PSD lists failed referendum as its victory

The failure of the September 5 constitutional referendum is a victory of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) won after businessman Victor Selin took over the party, PSD secretary general Sergiu Corobceanu said on September 7. According to the PSD, those who did not vote in the plebiscite penalized the governing alliance for disobeying the law and for conducting a presidential preelection campaign, not a referendum campaign, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We congratulate the Moldovan people on the victory won in the fight against the ruling alliance for preserving the constitutional norm,” Sergiu Corobceanu said in a news conference. He said the Parliament must be dissolved shortly and there should be called early elections. The PSD fears the governing alliance could amend the Election Code and shorten the campaign for the early elections from 45 days to 1-2 weeks. “The campaign might be curtailed so that the extraparliamentary parties do not manage to convey their messages to the people,” Corobceanu said. The PSD considers the Alliance for European Integration want the early elections to fail so as to remain in power for one more year. Sergiu Corobceanu announced that the PSD opened talks over the creation of a Social-Democrat bloc with center-left extraparliamentary parties. The party is confident of entering Parliament and says it will try to reach a compromise so that the head of state is voted in.
