Provision of free converter boxes to disadvantaged families put off

The provision of free digital television adapters or converter boxes to socially derived families was proponed until 2019. In a response to an inquiry made by IPN News Agency, the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure said a sum of 10 million lei was earmarked for the purpose by the Government decision on the approval of the medium-term budgetary framework (2019-2021).

The decision to provide the families that benefit from social welfare with free converter boxes was adopted by the Government at the start of this February. The executive proposed allocating 5 million lei for purchasing such adapters when amending the 2018 state budget, but Parliament excluded this proposal.

In a response to IPN, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection said the lists of recipients of social welfare was transmitted to the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure.

At specialized shops and on the Internet, most of the digital television adapters cost 500 to 1,200 lei, depending on producer and functional properties. Besides converter box, the person also need an antenna to receive digital TV signal.
