Protests to continue at Vadul lui Voda peacekeeping post

People from the so-called Security Zone together with war veterans are going to resume their protests to demand the removal of peacekeeping checkpoints, in particular of post no.9 near Chisinau's suburban town of Vadul lui Voda, where on January 1 a Russian peacekeeper shot and killed a young man from Pirita village. Chisinau police chief Silviu Musuc communicated at the City Hall's ordinary meeting on Monday that a protest rally near Vadul lui Voda was scheduled for 10:00 AM. Public order would be protected by Chisinau and Dubasari police departments. Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca suggested that the police should intervene only in case of violence. “People there have a legitimate right to protest. They have many times requested the removal of that peacekeeping post. The police should not obstruct this legitimate manifestation in any way”, the Mayor requested. Dorin Chirtoaca also asked Musuc to advise the peacekeeping troops at the post to refrain from engaging in altercations with the protesters in order to avoid provocations. Several hundred people protested last week for several days in a row demanding the liquidation of the peacekeeping post near Vadul lui Voda. The protests were triggered by a fatal incident on January 1 where a 18-year-old man was shot dead by a Russian peacekeeper. The protesters adopted a resolution demanding that the peacekeeper in question be prosecuted, post no.9 be disbanded and the peacekeeping operation be transformed into an internationally mandated civil mission.
