Maia Laguta, who stages pensioners' protests in Chisinau, repeatedly asked today that the reexamination of the decisions to raise the water and sewerage charges and the bus and trolleybus fares be included in the agenda of the Municipal Council's meetings, but all in vain, Info-Prim Neo reports. The pensioners gathered in front of the Chisinau City Hall at 10.00 as they agreed earlier. Two hours later, the head of “Salvgardare” NGO Maia Laguta burst into the assembly hall accompanied by three pensioners. She demanded that the decisions made by the Municipal Council on September 15 be reexamined, but the councilors did not support her. Chair of the meeting Oleg Cernei said that all the questions that appear after the agenda is approved can be discussed at the end of the meeting. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said that about 50,000 pensioners have received the monthly compensation of 70 lei for trips by public units of transport and this makes him think that the pensioners agree to be paid compensations instead of being allowed to travel free of charge. Maia Laguta replied that the people take the compensations as they are afraid to lose them, but this does not mean that they complied with the decisions. They simply have no other way out. “How can you increase the charges when the elderly people receive such a small pension?” one of the pensioners who accompanied Laguta asked with tears in his eyes. The pensioners dispersed in several hours, but said they will take to the streets every Tuesday and Thursday until their claims are satisfied. But they will protest for several hours as it is cold outside.
