Protesting farmers heading for Chisinau with agricultural machinery

The farmers who during several days have protested in a number of districts of the country on August 13 set off for Chisinau. They said the authorities make only promises and do not provide solutions to support the agricultural sector that is in a disastrous state owing to drought and hail.

Contacted by IPN, Andrei Dînga, a farmer from Ștefan Vodă, said the protests have continued since August 11, when the farmers took their machines to the street. They involve farmers with several tens of units of transport, including young fanners who returned to the country with money, invested it in agriculture and now sustain only losses.

Andrei Dînga noted that the protest is peaceful and apolitical and warned the politicians not to try and obtain political advantages based on the situation of farmers.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu could not convince the farmers to abandon the protest. “He called us ‘tax evaders’, saying we receive more than we pay in taxes. We explained to him that this is a strategic sector that ensures the food security of the people and it should be supported by the state,” said the farmer.

Andrei Dînga also said that none of farmers’ demands was satisfied. “He ignores us with his typical sarcasm. I do not understand why he hates those who cultivate the land so much. We were indignant at what the Premier told us and decided to go on. If he does not hear us, the international organizations, the Government of Romania, the European Union, the FAO, the EBRD could hear us,” he noted.

The farmers plan to park the machinery near the South Bus Station of Chisinau.
