Protesters seek resignation of Government and of President Dodon

A group of people, among whom Nistru war veterans, in a peaceful protest mounted in Chisinau on August 23, demanded that the Government and President Igor Dodon should resign. They expressed their support for the farmers who haven’t been heard by the authorities, as they consider, IPN reports.

Vasile Costiuc, the leader of the Party “Democracy at Home” who organized the protest, said the system working now in the country should be stopped, liquidated because it is illegal. “We will not give up until we get rid of Dodon and of this occupying regime. Down with Dodon!” he stated.

Veteran Constantin Covrig noted that the veterans are apolitical, but the parties are invited to join in. “The veterans know how to fight! Union! We call upon all the political leaders to unite, to leave vainglory aside. We do not care about the name and status of their parties. We want to have a united country so that our children return home. We want our country back. We want a national idea,” stated the veteran.

Another representative of the veterans stated his support for the farmers, teachers and pensioners who have very low incomes. He said he is against the schemes applied by the Government in agriculture, noting the money should reach the farmers. He stated he wants to know how large the country’s wheat reserve is and why the state didn’t offer the farmers seed wheat or money for them to be able to further run their businesses.

Iulia Pânzaru, the wife of a veteran from Criuleni, asked that veterans’ rights should be respected and that they should be offered allowances of 3,000 lei a month, tickets to the sanatorium, etc. “I want to ask Igor Dodon if he can raise three children with the allowance of 100 lei paid to my husband,” she stated.

Attending the event, former minister of defense Vitalie Marinuța, who heads the Ecologist Green Party, said that he has faced two big problems during the past four tears, besides COVID-19: the ambrosia and the oligarchic government led earlier by Vladimir Plahotniuc and now by Igor Dodon. “I deal with the first problem by taking pills, while the second problem can be solved concertedly. Nolens volens, this is politics and we should make it together. Dodon is stealing groundwater. They want the waste dumps to be burned so that we do not have clean air. We will not solve these problems if we are not united. The people want another political class,” stated the politician.

In the same event, the leader of the National Unity Party Octavian Țîcu said that he didn’t aim to become a politician as he is a sportsperson and a historian, but he can no longer tolerate the degradation of the political class and thus undertook to build the ACUM Bloc. “I brought the unionists into the ACUM Bloc because I pursued the goal of removing Plahotniuc, but our supreme goal is to remove the government, the Democratic Party together with the Party of Socialists,” he noted.

The leader of the Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoacă said the anti-Dodon political forces should support a common candidate in the November 1 presidential elections.

The organizers of the protest called on the people to come to the central square of Chisinau for a new protest on August 27, starting at 9am.
