Protesters in central Chisinau demand to validate mayoral elections

Supporters of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” ( PPPDA), the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) and the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) and inhabitants of Chisinau on June 20 protested against the court’s decision to not validate the election of Andrei Nastase as mayor of Chisinau. After they gathered together in front of the City Hall and then marched to the head office of the Democratic Party, these went to the Great National Assembly Square where they chanted slogans and demanded to validate the mayoral elections, IPN reports

Mayor-elect Andrei Nastase called on the citizens of Chisinau to daily come to the City Hall starting at 6pm to protest until his election is validated and to demand that the mixed-member electoral system be annulled. “No matter how many rigging possibilities are, they cannot rig as much as we can vote. This time, as they could do nothing, they decided to engage the selective justice, which is only a tool in the hands of the mafia,” he stated.

The leader of the PAS Maia Sandu said the protesters will go to the hearings until the elections are validated. “This government prepared all the conditions for the votes in all the constituencies in Chisinau in the parliamentary elections to be robbed. This is the PDM-PSRM plan. They test our limits. We were too obedient. We have an example showing that they don’t care what we want. They steal our vote!” she noted.

Dan Perciun, who heads the PAS youth organization, called on the young people to take to the streets and defend their democratic right to elect.  He noted they dashed young people’s hopes that something can be changed by voting. This situation can be changed only if the young people are united and mount large-scale and peaceful protests in the central square of Chisinau alongside the others.

PLDM deputy chairman Alexandru Bujorean said a theft was committed in the evening of June 19. The people were robbed of their vote in a cynical way based on embarrassing reasons called “electoral agitation on the election day”. The call to vote when the name of the candidate is not specified is not electoral agitation.

Singer Catalin Josan said the persons who had to leave the country because of the injustice witnessed here want to return to a nice and clean city. “It’s time to clan the city as this city should flourish. I want to see this city full of freedom and education,” he noted.

A number of young people who gave speeches said they want the country back and do not want to go abroad. They want their families to return home and to together build a future here.

Besides the regular protests that start on June 21, at 6pm, the organizers announced a march for democracy that will take place on June 24, starting at 2pm.

In the evening of June 19, the Centru branch of the Court of Chisinau decided to not validate the new mayoral elections held in Chisinau, which yielded Andrei Nastase as winner.
