Protest in front of Parliament Building

Representatives of civil society organizations on May 8 mounted a protest against the modification of the electoral system based on the bills adopted by Parliament on May 5, IPN reports.

Political analyst Oazu Nantoi said the party-based proportional representation system is the only peaceful way to remove the current government. “We do not struggle for the proportional representation system. We struggle not to be obliged to put the stamp against a party that discredited itself. Today we have a last chance to show that we are not a crowd that can be endlessly manipulated. We are citizens who want to change something,” he stated.

Programs director at the Center for Politics and Reforms Dumitru Alaiba said the rain will not prevent them from coming to the protest. “We want the authorities to listen to all the opinions, even the most contradictory ones, about the uninominal and mixt-member electoral systems, if they want us to trust them. We have witnessed two months of propaganda, but have never had a sincere discussion with the government. They ignore us and we will ignore them,” he said.

Energy expert Sergiu Tofilat called on the people who want to live in a democratic state to take to the streets and defend their rights. “The people should go out and say a categorical “no” to this government. We will not concede. We will struggle as long as it is necessary. I do not want to see a privatized Parliament. I do not want to see old and impotent people in Moldova, who do not have where to go,” added Tofilat.

Representatives of civil society plan to mount protests against the modification of the electoral system in front of the Parliament Building every day starting at 5pm. A large-scale protest will be staged in the central square of Chisinau at 12 noon.
