Protest against construction of car wash

The Ecologist Movement of Moldova and an initiative group are protesting against the building of a car wash in a wooded area in Chisinau's Rascani district, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vladimir Garaba, the head of the Chisinau local organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova, urged the competent bodies to respect the General Urban Plan. “How can one construct something in green areas when the law bans the reduction of the size of such areas and the persons to blame are held accountable,” Vladimir Garaba said in a news conference on November 23. Radu Busila, the jurist of the Association of Garage Owners No. 134, said the City Hall issued an urbanism certificate allowing building the car wash on three garages of the given association. The person in whose name the authorization was issued extended the construction on four garages, up to the park situated on Dimo St, covering some of the heating pipes. “We lodged a complaint signed by over 1 000 persons, asking that the authorization not be issued, but the City Hall issued it and the construction started,” said the jurist. Now the sides are defending their interests in court. The case is being examined by the Supreme Court of Justice. Radu Busila said that there are two booths beside the construction and there were issued orders to pull them down. The booth owners appealed the demolition decision to court. In the same news conference, Veaceslav Iordachi, a representative of the initiative group for liquidating the market located between the streets Cantemir and Ismail, said the people living nearby and the companies working there are against the extension of the market beyond the area allowed by the authorization. “The market is situated three meters from the apartment buildings, when the distance should be minimum 50 meters,” said Veaceslav Iordachi, adding that the market was set up on a temporary basis, until a shopping center was to be built there. The construction of the center was completed in 2002, but the situation remained unchanged. The wooded areas in Chisinau now constitute 16 square meters per capita, but they will significantly decrease if we erect new constructions at such a pace, said Vladimir Garaba.
