Prosecutors send case on “plane that landed in Briceni” to Ukrainian colleagues

The Prosecutor General’s Office sent the legal case opened over the violation of the flight rules and of Moldova’s airspace by an AN 2 aircraft to the competent bodies of Ukraine, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the PGO. The Transport Prosecutor’s Office established that the AN 2 plane belonged to a Ukrainian company, but was sold to a private individual in Chernauts region. Under the contract, the seller was to take the plane to a place agreed by the parties, not far from Kelmenets in Chernauts region. On August 19, 2010, the AN-2 plane operated by a Ukrainian national set off from Antonovka village of Ukraine’s Hmelinitsk region to Chernauts region. He entered the Ukrainian and Moldovan airspace without permission and then landed on a field near Berlinti village of Moldova’s Briceni district. According to the Transport Prosecutor’s Office, the pilot abandoned the aircraft and then left Moldova. The pilot is now in Ukraine and thus the Moldovan bodies cannot complete the investigations. Under the national legislation of Moldova and Ukraine and the international conventions joined by the two countries, the pilot cannot be extradited to Moldova. Therefore, the prosecutors decided to transmit the case to the Ukrainian authorities so that they continue the investigations.
